Smile Engine wear in period

Hi all, just got my new wrx on monday. Was advised the following and just wanted to clarify/understand a little more about why the following practices are advised.

For the first 1800km, no revving above 4k rpm, drive at variable speed if going on a long hwy drive.

Firstly, I always remember hearing 1000km quoted, not 1800km. Secondly my limited and basic understanding is the variable speed allows componants such as piston rings to wear into cylinder bores evenly.. preventing premature engine failures.

Anyhow, I am not disputing/trying to create arguments, I just would like to educate myself about this practice. I understood that the enginers are run prior to the build anyway so was a bit confused. Also specifically, why limit revs, i can understand something like red-lining the vehicle, but 4k rpm just means im itching to put my foot down the whole time.

Thanks for any words of advice in advance!

Mark.

Firstly, some people believe that you should run in an engine by driving it like you would for the rest of its life. ie a mixture of easy driving but also flat out.

But do as subaru say since your car is under warrenty
if you engine does die you want to be able to honestly say that you ran it in properly.

im sure this subject has been covered many times also..

When i bought mine new i was told to not to worry about 'running it in' as that is all done at the factory and to just drive it as normal.

I never redlined it or anything but i did take it over 4k pretty regularly.

I bought two new Subaru's last year and was told 1500km run in and under 4000rpm with all four engines (long story).

I havent looked but if the book mentions run in that is what the warrenty will be based on.

Sounds very similiar to what I was told when I first signed for the car and made enquiries.. but at hand over was told to do the 1800km thing.

When I bought mine I was told 1400kms and not over 4000rpm (yeh right). I was also told they are run in at factory so it's not majorly important just something they tell there customers.
