This is why I stick to the 205/50/16 on the wrx... The re003 in that size were less than $200 a corner

Would have liked to get 255s but I think I'll go to 245/40 they are much more common so should be a fair bit cheaper

Damn that's pricey, I pay less than 200 a corner all year 'round for 215/45 17's for RE-003s. Massive price difference for sizes.

Picked up some RE003's myself the other day.
Quoted $279 each for 215/40/17. Paid $195 each for 215/45/17. Cheers, Wrxpc |

Havent headed to track to experience them 100% yet, but they hella gripy

On GC8 with the 16x7 rims the stock size is of course 205/50 16...
I was wondering if anybody has thoughts on running 225/45 16? I am looking at getting the Dunlop Z2 Star-Spec -- While it would be only 5mm smaller in diameter from 205/50 16, it would offer up a whopping 1" extra tread width with this tyre (8.5" instead of 7.5" treadface width)! The tire rack site says the 225/45 16 is applicable for 7" wide rims, so all good there. I'm presuming the difference in diameter is within ADR tolerances from "stock" (since stock is definitely 205/50 not 205/55). The only downside is that the 245/45 is 2 lbs heaver (0.9 kg). Cheers |

I've run 225 on stock 16s for 8 years. I have run 225/50 on road tyres and 225/45 on race tyres. I think the reason I started down the /50 road rather than /45 was due to having better variety at the /50 (for road cars anyway; certain race tyres aren't even offered in 225/50) so I've kinda stuck with it.
Remember, the second number (205/50) is the tyre's height as a percentage of the tyre width, not the tyre height in mm. Therefore a 225/50 will be taller than a 205/50, not the same. Heights: 205/50 = 102.5mm 225/45 = 101.25mm 225/50 = 112.5mm Tyre's outer circumference (for 16" wheels): 205/50 = 1920.8mm — this is the base number 225/45 = 1912.9mm — this smaller circumference will result in a +0.41% difference in speedo reading; speedo reads over, so when actually traveling at 100km/h your speedo will read about 100.4km/h 225/50 = 1983.6mm — this larger circumference will result in a -3.17% difference in speedo reading; speedo reads under, so when actually traveling at 100km/h your speedo will read just under 97km/h …I think.
