My car is running full stock standard 98 ADM WRX running gear. Previous owner of the engine decided to fit a pod filter. Rather than buying an adapter, he hacksawed the end of the AFM where it normally attaches to the air box.
The AFM on my car is this one,




I just picked up an airbox assembly of a JDM 97 STI. The AFM attached to it is this one,



It plugs in fine, just wanted to know if there is likely to be any adverse effects if I fit this? I want to get rid of the pod as I believe it is just sucking hot air from the engine bay.
Whilst I am at it, K & N panel filter, oiled or not? Has one in the air box, if its oiled I might chuck it.

re: K&N Panel filter, (some people like them some don't)

NO oil otherwise you will be looking for another AFM shortly after
If it is oiled you can get a cleaning kit that will "clean" the filter of any loose dirt and oil, dry completely before reinstalling into box. If you need a recharge kit you can use mine if you get stuck.

Corry, you'll find that is a 90mm AFM & your old one would have been 80mm, not too sure they are compatible as they are a totally different computer.

Pretty simple really....google the part numbers and see what they suit.

Pretty easy to work out with 5 mins of your time.

STI one won't work on your car as the actual air flow Vs afm response would be way off for your WRX ECU.

also your WRX one may be a 5 pin AFM V 4 pin for the STI both use the same plug with more or less teminals vacant.

get yourself a z32 afm man.. bolts straight on to ur "short-fat" bit induction hose as it is 80mm. and after that no dramas.
If u have an aftermarket ecu or piggyback with the car, best to get it retuned due to different voltage readings on the 2 afms.

Im guessing Corrie trusts the people he knows on this forum more than random people who quote part numbers on the net.

At the end of the day almost anything in the technical section of this forum could be googled but it is still a very popular section because people like to know what trusted and experienced wrx owners have to say on a technical issue.

Spot on Rob. Both AFM's are 3 pin and look near identical. It was Tom that has informed me the STI one is 90mm so that info was useful. I was hoping to find out from other people that may have faced this situation rather than searching google for bullshit answers from some random keyboard warrior that thinks they know all. Dont get me wrong, I am not having a go at anyone here, but when doing the conversion on my car I had so many things that people said that just were not true. For instance I was told that a WRX radiator would not fit into a Impreza chassis without replacing the lower rad support. I tried it myself to find it is bullshit. Fits no dramas. Libertys on the other hand that is correct.
