My old UEL headers had CiC ceramic, then wrap. And there was no issues with cracking welds or other damage etc. I think the wrap, if anything, probably protected the ceramic coat?

My turbo has a ceramic coated turbine housing, and that then has a beanie, and then a heatshield over the top. And last time i had it apart, it still looked fine.

This is the most recent pic of the 1600 I have . Mate I sold it too changed the intake and has put a new beanie on as the old one went off colour . Can try and see if he has any pics of the hot side when it came out for the respray.

I know he had the turbo serviced when he removed the engine for the respray and the person rebuilding it commented on the ceramic coating saying he couldn't believe it was done that long ago.

Go the Dattos! Had a few 1600's over the years, best one was the old Nova Smash Repairs Group G rally car, it was near bullet proof. I miss that hydraulic handbrake.

At which point does one start to need ceramic coating or wrap?

250hp? 300? 400+ hp?

Is it only big horsepower applications? Or anything with a bigger 255l fuel pump and turbo?

To be honest, i would have said it doesn't matter what hp level. Heat is heat. If you can reduce it, it's a win.

The main reason apart from possibly reducing damage to components that are close to a heat source is spool. I have read that containing heat in the exhaust flow can give as much as 500 rpm earlier spoil. I can't say for certain

See, I read that trapping the heat in the exhaust, and preventing it from dissipating, is bad.

Good info. I shall be wrapping.

BTW the headers with 'factory ceramic' were heating the plastic underbody splash tray. spots of slight melting.
I read up and bought a few metres of this CAR Turbo Exhaust Insulation Heat Shield Thermal Reflective Self ADH Wrap MAT | eBay

Works perfect, the underside splash guard gets barely warm now and has held on perfect no lifting/unstickiness at all.
However close to all heat is radiated back up, contributing to the heat soak. But looks shiney too.

Hotter exhaust gases are meant to move faster through the system than cooler gases is what I have read, aiding spool and response. Due to lower density.
