Exhaust side turbo seal going mate (oil being sucked past the seal on over run).

Bov won't cause blue smoke but will cause a puff of black (rich) smoke between gear shifts.

The bov is a fully atmospheric type. The one that makes the whistle sound. I am not sure this would be the main cause but certainly a contributing factor.
I asked RMS and they said they can fix the seals on the turbo for $300. Is this worth doing or should i look for a newer turbo?

Sometimes the smoke is black on take off but most definately blue when you lift off the gas once you have entered boost for a few seconds.

If it is the turbo are these easily installed? I have been quoted $400 just to install a new turbo.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Wes

Wes, I have a HKS SSQV atmo BOV on my GC8 STI...It never smokes mate and it's got 198,000 km on it.......Don't see how it would contribute to your problem at all.

Turbo isn't too hard to swap, it's DIYable if you can spin a spanner.

Thanks LegacyRS,
One thing i can do is spin a spanner so i guess i just need to source a vf34 turbo now then install it along with a new pcv valve and have a retune for the Autronics. Oh and a compression test.

Does anybody know anyone selling a vf34 or a good place to get one in Perth?

Cheers

Don't forget to buy the turbo flange and dump gaskets!
also would pay to getting the banjo fitting crush washers too.
