So do the turbos gradually get in and outward shaft play when they wear. He said it's only done 15k kms. Will 0.5mm of play make any difference to the turbos performance or give any indication of it's age?

A perceived 0.5mm of play in and out is nothing to worry about. As long as the compressor blade doesn't hit the housing when its all the way forward you will be ok.

Why are vf34's so damn expensive now? I got a PowerFC for $920 and vf34 for $900 like a year ago not even. The turbo has doubled in price and so has the PowerFC....:/

Do turbos get this kind of shaft play no matter what after a duration?

They've always been around $1500, as with everyone enjoying the exchange rate, you got spoilt. And they are STILL the best value for money turbo.

I saw one the other day and it had no play at all. 0.5 sounds reasonable. I threw an offer and waiting for a reply. Fingers crossed~!

Tiny bit of shaft play in/out is ok on the VF34's.....are you able to check it yourself or is it a interstate purchase? Mine had a slight bit of play in/out and was also 2nd hand (10,000kms use) and has been fine on my XT for nearly 2 yrs....what's it going in?

It's being bolted on a version 6 engine and the sale is not interstate. Hopefully i'll get him to show me the turbo tomorrow.
