Timing Belt Tensioners/Idlers= Big$$$
Hey guys,
I was doing my timing belt on the weekend and found that the bearing on the hydraulic tensioner was a little noisy. My friend who is a mechanic said he had trouble last time he ordered this part for a WRX. I called up Repco and they have quoted me $420 for the idlers, timing belt and seals. And for the kit with the hydraulic tensioner I was quoted a whopping $740. It seems they don't sell the toothed tensioner part I need on it's own. The kit with the hydraulic tensioner comes with the whole hydrolic unit. I don't need the belt as I have purchased one already and don't really feel like being bent over for this part. Can anyone suggest what to do?

Ebay have a few kits for sale which end up costing way less having them sent to your front door.
Just type in 'Timing belt wrx' and see whats available. |

When i did my timing belt, tensioner and water pump...the idlers wasnt changed coz they dont tend to fail. Couple of months later, this ticking sound was coming from the timing cover. Had to change em along with the timing belt again. Just under $900. Spewing
Note: Parts were all genuine.

have you tried other supplies?
coventry's, subaru... maybe try looking for secondhand ones if you are worried about price? (or are you building a new engine?)

Just got a price for the individual cogged idler that sits on the hydraulic tensioner. $121.00 I think i'll just replace the one noisy idler and leave the rest. Dont really feel like spending $500 bucks on more parts. Just when I think i'm nearly ready for the engine to be dropped in I find out I need to spend more money. Hopefully this will be the final hurdle.

If your engine is out and you have already spent money buidling it I would hold off another month to save some money and renew everything on the front of the engine.
Its never going to be easier to do than when then engine is out of the car and if you have been waiting months and spending big money your going to be mighty pissed off if it all lets go the first time you drive the thing! |
