I have pulled the drivers seat out of my 06 sti and there was no airbags. Only has the two front airbags as far as I'm aware.

excellent, thank you. There'll be an airbag tag on the side of the seat if there is.

I need to try and find a bit more hard facts. Currently going through the US forums and a 3 ohm resistor in the plug seems to be the fix. I found out there is also a seat distance sensor to contend with also but this seems an easy fix.

Had a win with unplugging of the airbag and an insertion of the 3ohm resistor into the plug to keep the airbag light off. Nothing went boom so happy days!

I found a good DIY artical on another Impreza forum with lots of photos covering how to put in seats and still have the passenger occupancy and seat distance / height sensors work....of course I cant find the flipping thing now!! Should have book marked it!

In the research I did I have not found any examples of anyone crashing with the resistor trick in place so I guess no-one knows if it works or not!

To be honest though I feel a little uncomfortable with the idea of messing with the cars safety systems....the airbags and seat belt tensioners are designed to work with the seats the car has and the seating positions the provide. I think I am going to investigate have the seat bolsters reshaped to be much deeper and more supportive and then have them trimmed with alcantara to be a bit grippy.
Its never going to be as good as a proper bucket seat but it will be an improvement, look stock and be more comfortable for on road were 99.9% of driving is done.

AFAIK if the airbag light is off then the system is still fully functional except the diconnected one. Subaru actually have a diagnstic tool which is a 3ohm resistor in a fancy plug which they use to test the airbag systems.
Hope I never have to find out....

Another thought on this...would it be possible to dismantle the stock seat and remove the airbag unit and dismantle that to remove the explosive and the airbag itself and just be left with the module the cable plugs in to?

That way when the ecu cross checks it can find the module but there is just nothing attached to it that goes bang.
