Hey guys,

just wanted some advice about suspension. im looking for the right setup that will give the car the right cosmetics looks im after but also some improved handling.

car its not used on circuit or anything like that, just a bit of fun on the street here and there.

can i acheive decent handling with some springs. or is it just better in the long run with coilovers. price is a factor i dont wanna be spending mass amounts on coilovers but in saying that dont wanna cheap out a few hundred and just get some decent springs and struts and stuff and regret it.

any input appreciated.

I had whiteline flatouts (springs) in my 02 STI. Were quite low, and was a pretty stiff ride. However, I think I wish I had at least gone some HSD Coilovers (see BALISTC) At least you get the choice of adjusting ride height as well as camber and other bits and pieces.

Those coilies will set you back about $1299 to buy, plus probably a couple of hundred to get fitted.

Springs (whitelines) will cost you around $600-750 fitted.

For the price of $1499 the HSD type HR are excellent, the type HS are cheaper at $1299 but will still fulfill your needs. PM BALISTIC as he should be able to source these for you at these prices. It is a fairly easy DIY to install but you would definitely want to drive straight to a wheel alignment centre to get everything set tickety boo.

The biggest improvement however will come from fitting larger diameter swaybars front and rear, let's say for example 22mm thick at the front and 24mm adjustable on the rear with some heavy duty mounts all round (especially the rear). Check the Perth Workshops thread for your preferred supplier. Of course if the current struts and springs are nearing the end of their service life you'd be better off going for coilovers first. After these things are all done a roll centre kit and anti lift kit will have it driving like a pro when the bank balance allows.

in your oppinion is it worth extra 200 for the hr's

Depends who you are and what you want them for, but in most cases, probably not. I recommend the HRs because the pillow balls are fabulous, but that being said, the HSD TT's (new version of the HS), are great for street use, and seeing as you'll never see a circuit, they'd be just fine.

Hell, even if you did wanna go on the track, I doubt you'd even find the limitations of them.

are HS's even available anymore? I thought they were discontinued and replaced with TT's? From what i recall HS spring rates were softer, but HR's are not uncomfortable at all for daily driving use..

i have HR's in the Tourer V. They are very swish.. well worth the money. But then again.. anything would have been an upgrade from the chopped springs that were in there..

Yep, the TT's are the new HS's.

Some TT applications come with pillow-balls (I'd have to check this on the WRX applications though), the rest with the fixed rubber mounts.

The only difference between TT and HR in this situation would be the amount of damping available and the diameter of the shock.

The HR are inverted monotube
TT is Twin Tube (TT)

I like the idea of the new TT model. Twin tube is same design as TEIN Super Streets. It has lower dampening rates so its more suited to a daily driver. Plus being a non-inverted design the damping adjustment knob is on the top which makes life easier compared to HR/HS coilovers.
