6 Speed Conversion
Hey All,
My 2003 Forester XT has the standard 5 speed manual transmission, just wondering if anyone thinks it would benefit from a 6-speed transmission and if the 6 speed out of the WRX would fit fairly easily.. seeing as it's a pretty similar engine. Just thinking that car would benefit on the open road in having one more gear.. lower RPM at 110-120kph would be nice. use a little less fuel. - paul

Bolt on. 6 Speeds are my specialty.
First of all... whats your budget? $4500 is what you'd need minimum to pull it off. For roughly that budget you can get a close ratio VCD 6 speed from a Jap STI with a matching ratio VLSD rear diff. Drive in Drive out in 1 day. A close ratio 6 speed will have you doing 2800rpm at 100kph in 6th gear. They are incredibly strong, have better synchros that make them a pleasure to drive around the city with.

I think the question you have to ask is whether or not speeding 4500 is going to be worth the saving in fuel? Unless your planning to do some major power ups on the car I really don't see the benefit in fitting a 6spd at this stage.

Paul, have a chat to Burke (XT43) - he's got a XT which recently got a 6sp installed. He'd be able to give you an idea if its worth it. He uses it on the track a bit but pretty sure he drives it daily too.

I dont get long ratio boxes as mine are all Japanese boxes. But if you can find one, they are around the $5500 mark.

I'm stoked that I got the conversion done but for different reasons, mainly piece of mind more than anything as I get out on the track a fari bit. Lower times have been a benefit
Around town it is just as easy to drive but I can't really comment on the long haul driving but if it appeals to you I say go for it as there won't be any down sides. Quote:
why do you want the long ratio??

Any idea how much more a gc8 would weigh with a 6 speed?
