Default ST 499787000 / Removal front diff side retainer

Question for those that tinker in DIY...

Does anyone have access to Subaru tool ST 499787000 wrench assy, to remove front diff side retainers? Or something/advice as to how to remove one...? Are they threaded on there, (lefty loosey/righty tighty - or opposite thread).

(And without any stupid answers, ie, Subaru has access to the tool, etc).

Thanks in advance,

Brent.

Still have the uber slow leak out of the front LH shaft. (diff end). On inspection, looks like the oil seal just inside/under the retainer. So bought the oil seal, will go back tomorrow for the o-ring i think.

Just need to know how to remove the retainer, if its threaded etc, and if someone sells the tool, (noting its for backlash adjustment too), and ill be good to do it from there.

Brent.

You adjust backlash with the RHS retainer.

I just need to know if its threaded, or not, (easier), which way to undo it, if someone has the tool, or knows an equiv to buy, and ill be apples.

**bugger it here's the info**

The RHS reduces the crownwheel to pinion backlash but also combined with the LHS both of the caps together preload the diff carrier (side) bearings.

You can do it without any special tools, but mark the cap & case in 3 non-symetric spots.

You MUST count the exact number of turns when unscrewing the cap!

And upon re-installation count the exact turns in then align your three non-symetric marks.

if the lock tab isn't lining up flip it over there's 1/2 a tooth difference between sides.

A lack of preload will have your front diff sounding like mine (Cheers - Sik'em Rex & previous owner)......

Doug will know much more than me about this.

Thanks Ross...

Seems you were bang on the money. I had already done the exact marking you said lol, (just read your post now... haha), and then, using some ahhh... VERY creative engineering, housemate and I managed to undo the retainer. (Truth be told, they need'nt be super tight anyway, and took exactly 8 turns from the marks, till it lifted out). And yeah, then you just bang in the "E" shaped holding clip, narrow side up, and should be good!

Ok team... little bit of education for the un-educated...

If you currently have no idea wtf Ross and I were on about... heres some pics:

Looking from the wheel arch into the diff:

Closer inspection with retainer removed:

The OLD seal and the root cause problem:

Old and new, with the problem in-between:

The side of the retainer you can see:

And its other side:

So new seal is ready to be dropped into the retainer, Ill be back at Ozzy Park at opening time tomorrow for an o-ring, and then its full steam ahead for re-assembly. Special tool NOT required... and some time, photos, and learning along the way, got me through.

Bolt it all back up, drop in a new container of smurf blood... and we should be all good by lunchtime 2moro! Hooray for D.I.Y... haha.

Brent.

Seal lip support spring busted will do it everytime!

FYI: The bearing cup in the background it the diff carrier bearing cup... This is how the preload to the diff carrier bearings is applied as the retainer is screwed in.

Is there a specific torque for the retainer?
