Default hub issues

any ideas as to what would be causing my wheel nuts to come loose?
Car had a knock narrowed it down to wheel nuts being loose, tightened them up went for a very short drive, literally 200m and started to knock again...

Wheel nuts were loose again, a bolt has now sheered off the hub, leaving 4 remaining.
Car has been in my garage for a month after i heard this knocking sound,i looked at everything and cant see anything out of order besides the wheel nuts being loose.

Cars being flatbedded to mms tomorrow for other work im just stumped as to what would cause the wheel nuts to loosen in 200m of slow steady driving? Ideas please gents.

Cheers

Too much sideways action Chad...

Seriously though... it can't be good having wheel nuts come loose like that. Hope you get it all sorted mate.

Were the hubs really hot?

Collapsed wheel bearing?
Stretched threads in the nuts?

no they weren't overly hot, hubs pretty rusty and generally looking quite old hub bolt snapped clean off plenty of metal shards around the wheel etc...

You using stock nuts or ali?

Do you use the old school method of torquing them up or use a torque wrench?

Could be off topic but on my old emo STi the nuts came loose on my car and that was due to the powdercoating that was on the back on the wheel that met the brake disc which did melt under high temps and cause the nuts to come loose. I cant remember if your wheels are powdercoated tho?

a few things could cause the problem,
is the brake rotor sitting flush with the hub? are all surfaces clean of large amounts of rust. are you putting the wheel on square before tightening the wheels?
as stace said, tighten them a little more. torque specs mean fuck all when the nut is still turning because the wheel or brake disc is not going on flat, or when there is any rust, damaged threads etc.
do they feel tight or like they are still pulling the wheel on when you tighten them more?

rotor looks good couldnt see any form of movement in it... surfaces are good no rust on bolts just bit on the hub itself...

wheel is square making sure its on properly slightly tighten all the bolts to the same length before i tighten them up properly, i tightend them as much as i can with the socket set at home. took the current wheels off with a rattle gun, put some 16s on for a few weeks then back to the 18s with a rattle gun again recently...all other wheels are good nice and tight no noise or movement bolts are still tight.

threads may be damaged seeing as the whole bolt snapped off but i tighten as much as i physically can and the wheel looks flush to the hub/rotor but then they loosen if i drive it.

towed to mms tomorrow morning so it doesnt matter a whole heap just want to know what im up for, probably new hub i guess and we will go from there.
