Default Turbo silencer??

I was reading through a few of the forums yesterday and someone mentioned about a DIY mod that can be done by removing the turbo silencer.
I wasn't aware of such a part.
Has anyone done this before?
Does it affect the performance?
What are the benefits?

search "resonatorectomy" or "snorkelectomy"

Look at www.fobz.org - in wrx DIY guides.

It involves taking out the resonator out of the drivers side guard, and allows you to hear the stock blow off valve a little more.
