I'm with rossco, probably an oil pickup crack. Very common now in the US. First thing I thought when I read the symptoms. Get it checked, it will DEFINATELY cost you an engine.

Well it seems it was due to low oil level. Had a look underneath the car yesterday and there was definitely some traces of oil under the sump and around the sump plug but checked the sump plug and it was definitely not loose or appeared to be leaking.

I then put just under a litre of oil in and took it for a drive and the gauge is stable as, showing a solid 600kpa doing around 3000rpm once the engine warmed up.

So tomorrow the plan is to drain the oil and replace the filter and sump-plug just to be sure and put new oil in & steam-clean the engine/engine bay and then keep a close eye on things to see if I can see any oil leaks.

doesnt mean you shouldnt check your oil/water more often

a litre of oil wouldnt evaporate overnight without leaving something for you to slip in.
