Starter motor perhaps? I remember with the old Skoda we had the same problem. Hit it with a hammer a couple of times and it starts.

sounds like the gear on the starter motor isnt moving forward and engaging on the flywheel before it starts to turn.

Easier to just replace the starter motor with a good condition replacement. Should be able to score one for under $100

try rolling the car forward in gear then try again, ringgear may be stripped in one spot?

If you have trouble starting it, get someone to turn the car over while you give the starter motor a couple of solid hits
