Spilt hot coolant smells like socks that have been worn for all 3 days of a 3 day hike and then cooked in an oven on 180 for 15 minutes.
As Marc said, tell tale traces will show up white on any metal surfaces or rubber lines running through and around the engine bay. Pain in the ass to get rid of too..... It only takes one pin prick sized hole to spray a bit of pressurised coolant onto something hot and she'll smell to high hell with wisps of steam as it turns to a vapour.
