Exclamation Problem in cooling system

okay so i need a bit of help because this has got me puzzled.

Basically my car has been overheating... but thats just the thing it isnt actually overheating.

My temp gauge keeps on going right up so i pull over and its fine, not overheating. So the thermo fans keep kicking in but its not that hot.... and like i said the temp gauge is up but there are no warning lights that come up or anything.

Im just trying to figure out what it could be. Is there any sensors anywhere to do with the cooling. My gearbox was fixed on monday and its only ever done it since i got the car back. Never did it before in the whole time i have owned it.

Suggestions anyone?

Have you done anything with the coolant lately? replaced it? topped it up? found a nice little puddle under the car?

Could be 2 things -
* Low on coolant from a leak or not filling up properly, creates an air pocket in the system which contributes to overheating. Doesn't happen straight away so might have been a gradual thing. Once the car is completely cooled (!!!) take off the cap & see where the coolant level is. If it's low you'll need to fill up & burp the system.
* Thermostat has been bumped/damaged somehow when doing the gearbox & giving dodgey readings.

sounds like an airlock in the system

Check the sensor for signs of wear/possibility of being knocked about.

Get your bf to flush the system and use Subaru coolant with distilled water. There are cheaper coolants on the market but for what it could cost you in the long run its not worth it.

Also see if you can see any signs of coolant leaking on the hoses or radiator itself, helping you to trace it back to the source (if this is the issue).

Blocked core? Mine went around the ten year mark in my old Lib.

more than likely air in the system that needs to be burped out

so what was wrong with your gearbox? was it the tailshaft centre bearing failure?

As stated, try bleeding the cooling system from the header tank on top of the inlet manifold. You need a container that will seal in the hole where the cap goes, half fill it with coolant, then with A/C off run the engine till the thermo fans kick in, let them cycle and go off. You should see bubbles coming up through the coolant in the container. give it a couple of revs to get all the air out. Remove the container and put the cap back on. fill the reservoir over the full line by about 5cm as it will suck coolant in when it cools down. If that doesn't fix it( can't really see why gearbox repairs affect the cooling system anyhow) Then you need to pressure test it for leaks, or it may be a blocked heater core.

Thanks heaps fellas

Well itl either be air lock or a blocked radiator because all hoses have been done along with thermostat and housing.

Can anyone tell me where the coolant sensor is located too?

And no it wasnt the tail shaft.... the diff had a shudder, somehow a cv boot was missing, my flywheel was shattered through the box and clutch was dead

Coolant temp sensor is in the alloy coolant pipe on top of the block, brown or grey connector. At the front near the oil pressure switch. Very unlikely that its faulty though.
