Buying a car from a mechanic doesn't always mean it has been looked after... Mechanic that works on our work cars hasn't serviced his car since new, now done 40k km and just got round to changing the oil. But you could have a mechanic owner that spends every spare minute on the car, so get your RAC checks or a trusting mechanic to take a good look over the car before you buy i

May i ask how much Transmission replacements cost? Is it a rebuild of the gearbox, or is it a replacement with a second-hand with lower KM's. We talking a few thousand, or 10 thousand?

Think I saw a figure somewhere for engine rebuilds of about 6-8 grand? Trying to factor everything in. The car im looking at now (was going to buy one from P-Diddy but cant afford it sadly) looks VERY immaculate on the exterior and interior, and under the bonnet. If I think the guts can last another year I may go and have a drive. It only has to last 12months by then I can afford to recondition the lot.

Look at your overalls if you think the engine is likely to see major fail within a year the car has essentially cost you the purchase price plus X thousand on a rebuild (that will be your adjusted purchase price).

You must be getting this car for not much at all as it would be the only way you could justify it.

Well at least under 10k and some.

Go early in the morning so the car is cold when you arrive. TELL HIM THIS.
CAR MUST BE COLD....
You can hear any death rattles better when cold.
The gear box will be the same, mine is a little notchy when cold but silky smooth when up to temp.

200km's are not a lot. Actually about right for the age. As stated it will depend on how it has been treated.
Take some one mechanically minded with you.

My advice is to drive as many as you can as well. Give your self some thing to compare it to.

All your going to hear when it's cold is the usual WRX piston slap.

Warm it up and it should be relatively quiet.....

When they slap at normal operating temp it's time for a rebuild, Mine has slap when warm now @ 243,000 km....It's been modded most of it's life though & running 22-25 psi for the last couple of years.

Stock motors rely on servicing for a long life. Check the service history & go from there.

Agreed that you need to take someone who knows subaru's with you.
