Default Selector Forks Gone?

Hey guys,

After a search I have not come back with much so I'll ask the question.

After the missus grinded second (badly) on the way home the other night I can no longer select 2nd or 1st gear. 3rd, 4th, 5th, reverse all seem fine. There was no large noise and seems to be no noise otherwise but I cannot select 1st or 2nd at all regardless of whether the car is running or not... Would this most likely be a broken selector fork or is there something else which could be causing this?

Thanks,
Joel

I would say it is a damaged synchro, teeth will be bent over, stopping the synchro sleeve from moving.
Its quite common on the 06-07's. Gearbox apart job I'm afraid.

when my third gear lost a couple teeth, it bent the selector fork and i could only get 3/4th/5th/reverse. was extremely difficult to get into 1 and 2nd. so you could be on the money there.

I'm having a similar problem since the week end. I miss shifted into 4th at only moderate throttle. I can select all gears ok, but 50% of the time going 3rd to 4th I get un-smooth clunk at best or a kinda gringing noise into gear at it's worse. I was thinking synchros as well, as It seems to change with revs.

Can any one recomend a subaru gear box speacialist in Perth?

Any ball bark figure for replacement? assuming it's only the one gear and doesn't need full recon?

Sounds like a damaged synchro on yours too, the teeth on the baulk ring are probably damaged. Any Subaru workshop should be able to do it, 5 speeds are one of the easiest gearboxes around to rebuild. Check workshops thread, or take it to your local, friendly Subaru dealership.

This thread is probably not a broken gear as such, the dog teeth on the gear stop the synchro sleeve moving.

I concur with John. I've seen it numerous times when someone has been too quick off the clutch and burred over the leading edge of the dog teeth. I've been guilty of doing it myself twice. (my excuse was that I was racing at the time and wearing a helmet you can't hear the grinding)

Most people think that when they 'grind a gear' that they are wearing away the teeth of the gear. This is not the case, all the gears are meshed all the time in a modern transmission, they are simply locked or unlocked to the shaft via small 'dog' teeth to drive through that gear. These teeth are much smaller than gear teeth and hence prone to burring over.

I can't see you getting any change out of a thousand $ by the time you remove, strip, repair and refit the gearbox at a reputable repairer. (unless your wife/girlfriend has an epic rack and drop the car off for you)
