If im not mistaken the K&N type filters require the oil.
What type of CAI do you have? If its larger then the standard 65mm diameter then you'll need to have it tuned. Basially the larger the diameter of the CAI the more air that passes the sensor, on a untuned car it will max the AFM in higher gears and start cutting fuel and lean out the mixtures. Play with caution! Last edited by Intra; 27-03-2011 at 09:32 PM. |

So ditch the K&N and replace it with an Apexi pod?

I think it is a custom made mandrel bent pipe. Not too sure of the diameter of it.
Also my car has had a verso tune, and runs quite rich.

Take it off and measure it, just eyeballing it i would say its about 70mm or 75mm.
Definitely get a retune with pipes like this! Maybe put the stock box / assembly back with the old AFM and see if the car has issues.. if all good for the week then you can sure as hell bank on it maxing out the AFM sensor. If that's the case i would be looking for tune options with one of the workshops available in Perth. |

Maybe I will ditch the whole CAI and go for one with a smaller diameter and smash an apexi pod on the end

Or do you mean if I was to swap the K&N for an Apexi Pod I would need a re-tune?

I've had a K&N pod on my bugeye for 50000k's with no issues. The OEM filters are oiled paper, so its not the oil, its the amount of oil on the filter, when you recharge the filter, just use enough to turn it pink.
Buying a second hand AFM is always going to be a bit risky, no garantee's. Have you checked your sparkplugs? They can cause what you've described if they are very worn. Although, it would probably have misfire codes. K&N filters need to be oiled, don't run them dry.

get a apexi dry pod with a adaptor on it so you can bolt it straight on no need for retune

I have already taken my car into All Star Garage and they said it was the AFM. So i'm guessing it has something to do with the new AFM or Intake. I also had this same intake on my last car 03 WRX un-tuned for about a year with no issues whatsoever.
I also did not buy the K&N recharge kit, just washed it with soapy water, cleaned off the soap then waited for it to dry and put it back on. Maybe it is having issues due to the fact that it is not oiled.

Go on ebay, search for airflow meters for Subaru's, a mate of mine found a shop selling brand new ones for bugeye onwards for 200 each, same part numbers and everything. I don't think not oiling it will cause issues, apart from the fact it wont filter properly. Maybe ask ASG to recharge it for you, and ask their opinion about K&N filters. Like I said mine has been on my car for ages, been cleaned and recharged twice by me, and I've had no issues at all.
