My vote also for a CV. Jump under the car and/or check in engine bay & see if any CV joint grease has sprayed out. Make sure you check inners as well as outers. Any grease on the exhaust will pong like hell.

I would say CV joint too, being the only part of a car i have ever broken personally, definately sound like a CV i know its the only tech question i will be able to answer for a while , does it sound like drilling into concrete at all (best way i can describe the noise) go get it checked before it wares all the way through and then the car wont go into gear when it finally gives

Bad news..
Talked to Leigh at RMS today, he said it's the wheel bearings, and that it's going to cost over a grand to fix. He said it wont be covered under warranty because i have suspenion mods, and that i'd have to remove everything. I'm really fucking pissed off. Folks have had a go at me, and i don't have the money for that repair right now. Thanks to Leigh anyway, he temporarily fixed it for free, and also checked it out for me quick smart, as i only called this morning. |

I just spoke to John Fowler from Wheels World, and he said my suspenion mods have no relation to the wheel bearings. I have Whiteline Flatout springs, camber bolts, whiteline sway bars, endlinks. My alignment isn't very aggressive either.
From what i know, usually the cause of this is kerb kissing, but i haven't hit any curbs. The only cause i can think of, is when someone went into the side of me, hitting my front left rim. But both sides need fixing, not just the left (according to Leigh). |

$1000 to fix a buggered wheel bearing? I'd be getting quotes from another workshop.
What is this mysterious fix Leigh has done? Sounds very fishy. |

Yeah, i'm going to head down to Steve at MMS tomorrow. That's a lot of money for wheel bearings.
Edit: Rob was there, but the rest of the boys are away. So i had a quick look myself, everything appears to be normal, the cv joint looks fine, the boot surrounds look normal. I don't know really, i'm no mechanic but nothing looks out of the ordinary. Leigh @ RMS did mention something was toucing the ABS.. Last edited by Huy; 04-03-2006 at 01:31 PM. |

Wow, this turned out rather differently than i expected!
I took it to Subaru, and found out it was neither the cv joints or bearings; it was the IC spray! Apparently it had been spraying all over the place, particularly at my wheels, washing off some of the lubrication. He said from the factory, it must not have been lubed up enough. I also noticed the clutch felt strange, it wasn't as smooth as usual. This was a result of the IC spray as well! Although today after i sprayed, it felt strange again. Anyways, the noise is gone and it's all good. He did however, say that with my modifications, it'd be hard to get anything on warranty. This was just a simple re-lube, but anything else, i'd have no chance. Apparently someone else he knew had some basic mods on their car, and the gearbox went. It was not replaced under warranty. But hey, anyone who mods a new car takes that risk. I think i'll just slow down a bit... Last edited by Huy; 10-03-2006 at 07:38 PM. |
