Default Hole in my 'downpipe?'

(Down or UP pipe not to sure)
Hey guys, been having a boost problem for a little while now with my 01 wrx, symptoms are: I hear a 'fluttering' air-charging sound when in boost, boost isn't as strong and my exhaust makes a fluttering sound while idling. (also just had to replace my o2 sensor) I have a upgraded turbo-vf28, sti tmic, as well as a 3" turbo back exhuast. I am pretty new to all this stuff soo not to sure what im really talking about. But!..

Late last night while having a study break i went out to have a look around my engine bay to see if i could spot any obvious vacuum or pipe leaks.. and spotted this sucka:

It's the pipe coming straight down from my turbo..so I'm guessing this is a DOWN or UP -pipe? just wanted to get some info about what it is and does etc.. and how this hole can affect my car, and how to go about fixing it ><

Thanks heaps guys!

(Btw anyone going to that Luke Beyer's cruise?)

Nah it just looks like that, im getting all the symptoms of having a hole, Slow spool, delayed spool, unusually hot intake temps etc, + the my01's have a cat in the up-pipe, it just looks like a shield.

This is what a get for racing my friends new VE GTS at 3am with a cold engine..Doh!

Sound like an up pipe gasket. Check for sound in that area.

Very bad things happen if you don't have a hole in your down pipe.

Seriously though, the up-pipe should have been removed and replaced with a de-catted one when the different turbo went on, as there is a chance the cat has gone up into the turbo and now your turbo is fucked too.

UMMM, mate that is a heat shield, all genuine uppipes have a heatshield. catalyst or not. I own a bugeye, the first thing I did is fit a decat uppipe from MRT in the East.
You said in your first post your not really sure what your talking about, well most of us are.

It sounds like your pre-catalyst may have broken up, remove the exhaust downpipe, have a look in the turbine housing for any melted convertor material. Make sure the turbo spins freely.
Although, if its broken up, the car will idle poorly and struggle to generate any boost.

if you change it make sure it aint s/steel as s/steel expands and shrinks according to temperature this causes it to crack, i had this problem, it gets pretty costly

This is factual --- we see it so many times.:

There are 2 O2 sensors located between that up-pipe and the front/dump pipe. Leaks in the front pipe will cause the ecu to react to the different AFR readings sent to the ecu cal file.

Can cause a rich mixture and foul your plugs and could also cause a misfire.

hrmmmm, what boost?
