Need some help!!- Headgasket/Engine
Hey guys, just got some pretty upsetting news about my 01 Bug-eye, turns out my head-gasket is screwed! But not entirely sure to what extent.
Mao from Evolution-R has had a good look at it and with the symptoms of: Overheating (seems to be only when driving never at idle), Coolant seems to be disappearing, reservoir getting way overfull and staying that way when its hot or cold, bubbling in the reservoir tank, the heater only seems to work when I'm driving, goes cold at traffic lights. There was a bad radiator cap on it which he had already replaced but it still continued to overheat.(I think that's all) -Has come up with the problem being a blown head-gasket. So not doubting his professional opinion or anything but Is there any possible way that it is HOPEFULLY something else less serious?? If however it is the head-gasket what would you guys recommend: Either fixing it or just getting a new engine, I herd it's approx the same to do either or? (If anyone is selling a cheap EJ205 motor let me know!! :P) |

why dont you just speak to the guy who diagosed it and will possibly be doing the work to it?

possibly stuffed heater core?
pull out the passenger side floor mat and see if u can see coolant there or smell it Probably less serious as head gasket but still requires a tonne of work. |

Is the system bled properly? Sounds like there is bugger all coolant in it if the heater isn't working. Could be an air lock. The coolant may be evaporating if its getting really hot. But if its being consumed by the engine at a great rate, it would be misfiring.
A WRX blowing a head gasket, under normal driving conditions, isn't exactly common. But if Mao's working on it, trust his diagnosis. And it wouldn't be cheaper to buy a new engine.

Most likely a blown head gasket...

Blown Head Gasket - If you want to really confirm this ask Doug to do a ... was it a CK? Test. Doug puts a little chamber onto the top of the coolant tank with a chemical in it. If the exhaust gas is leaking through a warped head gasket, it escapes into the cooling system and up into this chamber, which causes a reaction with the gas and changes the colour of the chemical.

I've got a set of cheap unused head gaskets for sale if you need them.

Yup already suspected this when Superfly first posted his problem. Please see:
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/mechanic...ownpipe-2.html Snap-on gas tester has been performed and the liquid changes color. Also did a pressure test on the cooling system and there are no coolant leaks externally. To begin with, the cause of the simple cooling system failure was a leaking radiator cap. Changed the cap and bled the cooling system, but there were still consistent air bubbles coming out of the reservoir. Although it is rare for the headgasket to be damaged on a wrx, prolonged over-heating can cause damage to the heads themselves too. Dont foget also the the block is aluminium too. Recently had a Honda S2000 customer who overheated his engine. He not only damaged the headgaskets and head, the block itself got so hot that the piston walls were deformed. Regards, Mao/ Evo R |
