Default stock gc8 turbo upgraded to vf34

Hey guys,

To be straight up, I know little to fuck all about cars, and i wont denie it haha

In the future, when and if my stock turbo dies in the ass, i will most likely splurge out some cash and buy a vf34 turbo.

My question is, what other parts will be necessary in order to install a vf34 on a stock gc8 (MY00) to ensure the car runs smoothly and reliably like it did with the stock setup. I.E. will some parts need to be upgraded to improve the strength? Will i need a new TMIC? things like that.

My my00 cse4 wrx has little mods and i don't plan on changing anything apart from what I've mentioned above.

Current mods:

- 3" TBE
- Ecutek 1.5 type tune
- 500hp fuel pump

thanks guys, any insight/help is much appreciated

i believe as long as you get a proper retune, it'll run reliably. But if you want the turbo to run abit more efficiently, ie, more power, you'll probably want to get a larger sti tmic, air filter and boost controller if you don't already have them. Then the next thing after that is probably larger injectors for abit more head room as you'll probably max out your 440s by then.

Well my priority is to eventually get the vf34 while still having a completely reliable day to day car. I don't plan to ever race or go extreme on mods after the vf34.

When you say more power do you mean id be able to get more psi out of the turbo if i was to get a STI TMIC, air filter and boost controller which will as a result produce more power?

yes, also less lag with an sti tmic, and a decent boost controller will help stabilise boost as you turn the wick up

this is what I did to mine

VF34
walbro fuel pump
stock STI injector (516cc?)
Grimspeed/mac boost solenoid
silicon intake with stock airbox(resonectomy mod)
3" turbo back exhaust
retune to 1.6bar(207 motor)
good for 280-300hp/400nm

yea, engine wise the car will still be reliable and runs as smooth as stock with a good tune. However if you do get air filter, boost controller and sti tmic or maybe injectors, you'll be able to make full use of the vf34, hence more boost, torque and power, but at the same time, you'll most likely be looking at a new clutch as well as your stock one will slip. Then you'll be worrying about your gearbox.

However if thats far too much mods than you had expected then you probably shouldn't get a vf34. Afterall there is no real significant gain in running stock boost in a vf34 and without the supporting mods too. Even tho its a ball bearing turbo, it is a larger turbo, hence it should still be laggier than the tiny stock turbo.

Search.

Has to be one of the most common modifications done to all WRX's.

VF34 + STi TMIC + Tune = Superfunhappytimes.

Being a GC8 also read up on smashing your 5 speed gearbox.

This was the results of my powerFC tune today at 17PSI with a VF34 and GD STI TMIC and 3inch TBE

Clutch started slipping (OEM clutch on the way out) so that pretty much where it will stay for the time being until i find funds for headers and a new clutch/lightened flywheel.

This gives you an indication though of where you will be at with the same mods.

Not true. IC dont have an effect on lag. Lag is from the exhaust housing size. An Sti TMIC will actually increase throttle response time though as it a bigger chamber to the standard WRX one.

So basically as far as I now understand, If i go and upgrade to a vf34 and chuck an STI TMIC along with a tune i'll be getting alot more power but at the same time I will be putting my Clutch and 5sp Gearbox at risk? (I definitely can not afford to have my gearbox die on me haha)

If the clutch and flywheel are upgraded will this result in the gearbox being fine? or will this the gearbox still be under too much strain?
