Is it any chance it's just the usual new zorst "snap crackle pop" until it carbons up?

The new zorst on the last Subaru used to make all kinds of "rally sounds" until about 6 months after it was installed.

if you have a hi flow cat it doesn't help, when my bugs cold and i'm downshifting it actually sounds like i have antilag enabled, it will crack like 8 or more times

i've got a stock bov and no boost leaks

Mine never had any serious backfiring, just the usual popping when downshifting at certain speed/RMP range was met. Sounded normal, I have a TBE, Cold air and no tune done. However, it's not like the cracking you are describing, as said, take it to ASG and get them to find out what it is
