Default EJ205 vs EJ255

Hey guys,

So theres a possibility i might need a new engine in my 01 STI (not going to go in major details about it)

But was just wondering the difference the 205/207 block and the 255 block.. I know its the 2.0L vs the 2.5L, and some say the 255 is better, others say go with the rebuild on the 205 its got now.. So im just curious as to everyones opinion on what block i should get.

I am aiming to set the car up for the drags (not hardcore with a rollcage etc. on it) But i want it to be a fast everyday car.

Fast, Reliable, Cheap.

Choose two of the above....

ej255 needs a lot of work to be reliable with power, but once in would give you the most grunt.

ej207 are a pretty strong engine and although they won't have the same grunt as the 2.5L, they can handle more boost etc, generally more reliable.

I enquired about the CarModsAus special for the 255 block.. With the main parts, gaskets, timing belt, water pump etc, it worked out to be around $3500. Then ill factor in the fitting price, so i thought that was rather cheap.. I looked around and some 207's with like 50k's on the clock were around 7-8k fitted...

Add to your "$3500" ej255:
labor to remove & strip old motor,
Cost to recondition the heads,
New timing belt idlers & tensioner
New oil pump
Assemble new long motor
New clutch
Reinstall engine
Verso tune ($1200??)

And then it still won't be as 'tough' or reliable as a 207.

Just ask Stubaru.

A new 207 short motor is $2600 & inherently a stronger motor for the money.

EJ257 in my car with only upgraded CP forged pistons. 50,000+ km now @ 340hp.

Cant beat a 2.5L for daily driveability and torque.

Let me get this straight you're getting quotes for 7-8k for supply and fit of 207 with 50,000kms on it?

Is the block even AUDM?

Did Bug STi's ever come out with 205s?
