mate i just had this problem happen to me today and thought the engine had caught on fire!!!

popped open the bonnet after a couple of hours of letting it rest and had a look at the rubber pipe that connects to the radiator (i'll post a picture when i have time showing the location) and felt a nice 3 - 4 cm tear!! this was then leaking down onto the exhaust... coolant was empty as well which is what it felt and smelt like when squeezing this hose.. (which probably is the reason for the smoke due to the chemicals within the coolant)

Long story short I decided to get the car towed and hopefully will investigate further tomorrow. Rather have it just being that one pipe then being a whole burnt out engine!!

Mick.

I had the same and one of the CV boots had broken. Grease/oil was going on to exhurst i think. Took ages for it to go.

hey guys,

Thought I would respond to this thread. I have highlighted on the picture the pipe that I have found a laceration through which I believe was the reason for smoke coming out of the engine bay. Does anyone know where to find this pipe for a MY05 STI.

thanks.
Mick

The "steam" is from your car, or the original posters bugeye?

See usual suspects (Subaru, local parts store) for top radiator hose, or an I missing something here?

Me and my dad finally found out what it was, it was the Front inner drivetrain boot was split. it was spinning around and flicking grease onto the exhaust wrapping which was then burning, creating the smoke and making it smell. Thanks for the guys who told me to get it cheaked out, great advice from all.
