Default Power Steering Pumps

Hi guys, the power steering pump on the wrx is leaking and I was going to repace the seal between the two halves of the resvoir to see if that fixes it but have heard the 95 style pump and resevoir are shithouse and notorious for leaks and things.
Is it worth upgrading to a newer style and if so which one would be the best and is it a straight swap over or does it require modifying anything?

Upgrading to a later model pump is possible but it requires making up custom hoses between the pump, rack and reservoir.

I did it all a couple months ago on my RS liberty.

You can buy all the speed flow fittings and hoses you need from somewhere like go-gear so that the new style pump becomes a bolt on affair.

All up it cost me around $500 to do the upgrade with a late model GDB STI pump, speed flow fittings, teflon braided hoses, and a billet alloy reservoir tank. I did the install myself so no labour charge.

Hardest part is lining up the speed flow fittings on the steering rack with the engine still in place. Its pretty tight in there so you have to do it all by feel. But if you can pull that off, the rest is a piece of piss.

Is there much benefit going the GDB pump over a leter model gc8 pump? would the later model gc8 pump lineup better? Also was the pump you got new or second hand?

Yeah the newer pumps are more compact and running the braided hoses helps with cooling the fluid.

I paid $150 for my pump including the mounting bracket, lines, plastic tank and rubber hoses. Second hand. I ended up only using the pump and bracket though. Everything else was customised.
