Default R180 to R160 axle conversion

While searching the net I came across this, not sure if it has been posted but..

www.suberdave.com: The cost and what you get

Basically he makes custom races to convert the R180 axle end fit onto the standard axle so that there is no need to upgrade the hub assembly. I know there is a few standard axle's out there that bolt up (tuned by sti 07(R180 diff & R160 hub)), but these I am sure are quite hard to find..

So my question is, when people break the R160 is it generally a snapped shaft or internals that let go? so will the original shaft in most cases be strong enough?

Also peoples thoughts on doing this in general, and what are the chances of there being many broken R180 axles out there to help minimalise the cost of the whole conversion as opposed to buying 2 x axles and 2 x hub assembly etc..

cheers

generally you snap the shaft, clean breaks. but i have in the past shattered the cup/splines and down inside the hub.

so no guarentees
