Exclamation Irregular Idling

Hey Guys,

Here's a newbie question for ya, I've recently got a MY00 with a few mods... recently she's been irregular idling specially after a long drive. As soon as I come out of gear she drops down to 300rpm then goes up and down. Also my boost is changing with this.

Took it to get service a little while back and they said a hose has fallen off the air intake giving wrong readings. I got my radiator replaced and now it’s started again, I rang the guy who serviced my car and he still recons that it’s the hose that’s has fallen off again. Does anyone know of which hoes he may be referring to and do you have a pic if this? Do you think it could be anything else?

Cheers

it's your AFM (air flow meter).
new one will cost you around $250 from memory.
my guess is you're using an oiled air filter. oiled filters are known to coat the AFM elements and cause it to produce inaccurate readings - this results in fluctuating idle, and surging/hesitation on acceleration.

If you want an AFM, get one off ebay right now!

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Subaru-Air-Fl...QQcmdZViewItem

Before someone else buys it and on-sells it to you for $200

BAM!

Thanks for the info guys, just want to make sure that my mechanic isn't off the mark...Is there a hose on the air intake that could also make her irregular idle?

I've checked all round and there seems to be no loose or disconnected hoses, i actually spoke to the previous owner last night and he told me that he recently had the exhaust & 3" waste gate installed. Could it just be as simple as needing to be dyno tuned?

Go buy a can of CONTACT CLEANER from Dick Smiths or somewhere similar & spray the crap out of your AFM, mine was running like a pig bout a year ago so we cleaned it & it's been fine ever since, my mechanic said to replace it ($700) cos it was shagged but it's done 15,000K's since & I now make a habit of spraying it every couple of months, I have a spare MY98 AFM if you want to try it or buy it. PM me.
