Gear box oil burning
Hey guys, been noticing a nasty burnt oil smell for the last few weeks. I've tracked it down to wisps of smoke coming from around the turbo housing. It smells a bit strong for engine oil. I've checked the dipstick for the gearbox and its pretty low. I'm guessing gear box oil is being dumped onto the turbo housing or the exhaust somehow.
Any ideas? |

Top up your gearbox asap to avoid costly damage!
Also, check the rubber bung on the gearbox dipstick and make sure no oil is escaping from there as it is pretty close to the turbo. Check the brake and clutch fluid resevoirs for leaks too, as PMH says it could be some leaking from there onto the turbo too. |

also check the power steering and coolant hoses, I've had both of these go on me and had smoke come off the turbo when they leaked on to it.

could be front drive shaft seals spraying oil over the exhaust?

Years ago on my Turbo ET the seals were stuffed in the Turbo itself and it caused a burning smell. After a rebuild it was fine. I know it's a different car but it maybe a similar issue?
