I'm all for getting experience and improving ones mechanical knowledge, but... As a few people have said, attempting to put together a high hp, somewhat expensive build with no experience, does reek of failure. If you're completely set on it, then go for it, however if it was me, I'd pick myself up an older car, pre-injection days, and strip and build to your hearts content. It's how I started, building L series Datsun motors, and it was an inexpensive and rewarding hobby.

If you got the $$$ and the time who gives a flying ****. Have fun I could never do it as my patience would wear thin fast. A diy thread would be interesting regardless of the outcome.

As Dan mentioned, why not rebuild something a little less expensive, like an EJ with a spun bearing or something similar?

You'll spend less than a grand in gaskets and bearings, a little machining on top of that, and then swap it yourself into your car. If it works, you've then got yourself a fresh engine! If it doesn't, then you've not lost too much.

The problem with building an engine yourself is, if it fails, you could potentially wipe out engine parts with it.. And if you fork out for the best parts money can buy you'll have some expensive paperweights! Just as an example, I'm assuming you'll have a billet crank, and this could be damaged in a matter of seconds if you don't install and clearance the bearings correctly.
