The full story.

Went to salvage auction last Wednesday, purchased a supposedly hail damaged only wrx which i intended to use for the track so I can save my daily 2.0R. Paid 5k +fees, got a bruised up lemon with a rotten inside and i gotta make lemonade out of it some how.

Plan was to go to a mecho next week and get it diagnosed and was hoping it was going to be a timing belt and pully change over at most but deep down I had a shity feeling.

This presents me with an opportunity to find out all about the dakdak and do my first build.

I have read Johns 207 build thread any others that are worth look at?

I will definitely need to speak to someone who has had first hand experience building a dakdak, to get an overview of the tools that are needed and steps that are involved to accomplish the task.

I need to make a plan and I need your help.

No offence mate, but what made you think that a rattly motor was just a timing belt change away from being fixed?

None taken, 220k on the clock lead me to believe that the timing belt had not been changed, the position sensor error so this lead me to believe that the timing is off, out of sync hence the clapping.

My optimistic logic.

At the auction you could not check the odo as the battery was dead, could not start the motor to listen to it, so I bought the car based on what it looked like. If I had know about the rattling i wouldnt have bid on it. I was hoping to get a wrx in working order but with cosmetic issues which panel and paint would fix.

as i have said that code will come up when someone has been thrashing the shit out of it, if you take it to a subaru dealer their scan tool will show at exactly what rpm, road speed, boost ect that code was triggered.

an ej207 from subaru is fairly cheap now days so its going to be your best bet at gettin gthe thing running and reliable

Merry Christmas everyone!

Thanks Marti, I've been reading a lot of build threads and Ive had a look at what Jarvis Subaru has on offer. $3100 for 207 and gasket kit. That puts a big dent in the budget.

the EJ205 is cable of double the horse power (at the crank) without changing the internal components and only better inter-cooler and fuel system as support mods. I'm sure its not as reliable as a 207 however the budget is the limiting factor here.

Budget is $4000 to get the car fixed and over the pits.

At this stage it will be far cheaper to rebuild my current block with quality components provided the block and heads are reusable.

So at this stage I will need to pull the engine and take it to get cleaned and inspected. I haven't decided who will do the machining, etc. so suggestions are welcome.

As i haven't come across any Subaru specific and detailed engine build information with pictures/videos I would like to get in touch with someone who has build their own EJ20x to get a run down of whats required and what to expect. PM if you interested.

If anyone has any other ideas feel free to share them.
