Aircon problem
I've got an 04 wrx and everytime I turn the aircon on it makes like this loud PFFFFTTT noise some times quit loud and other times barely noticeable, it happens every 20 or so seconds and what seems to be like a loss of power for a split second the mechanics said it was the aircon compressor so got a new one installed only to find out the noise is still happening. The aircon works fine.
Can anybody help me out please |

When my aircon is running it also has the same symptoms as yours. And so has every other car I have owned driven.

noises to hear
AC expansion valve The hissing sound is caused by equalizing pressure. All cars even same models sound different When the car AC system is running there is a high pressure side and a low pressure side that is divided by either an expansion valve or an orifice tube. This is noise is coming from the ( make that the passengers side ) floor well under the glove box. When the vehicle is turned off or the air-conditioning compressor clutch is disengaged the system will equalize the pressure. The hissing sound is the ac gas from the high pressure side slowly feeding into the low pressure side and this is a normal condition. Another air-conditioning noise would be the sound of the condenser fan. When the air-conditioning is running the condenser fan will pull additional air through the radiator and the condenser. This can cause additional noise that is not present when the air-conditioning is turned off. Often this additional noise is sensed as a problem by the driver. Stand outside your air con outdoor box. Turn it on and off and hear it makes the same noise.
Don't worry :-)

Cut and paste from elsewhere on the internet, possibly the USA?
The compressor drive belt can make a noise, as can the tensioner idler pulley. Get someone who is familiar with Subaru or car A/C systems to check it. Last edited by dtrally; 31-03-2013 at 01:01 PM. Reason: spelling |

I thought that too at first. But LHD or not, is the glovebox ever on the drivers side?
