Also saying you prefer a 5 speed over a 6 speed is like saying you prefer an ugly chick over a super model because you are only going to stick a finger in rather than give it all you've got.

Its not 17k, asking price is 15k and might be able to get it lower. So I will see what happends. One thing that pulls me towards buying it is I wont have to do anything to it for a while. I mean I have seen so many people go out and buy second hand cars and shit goes wrong pretty quick. He is been my mechanic for about five years now and I known can trust him. Cars been well looked after with redline oils used in gearbox and diffs. Serviced regularly. Belts changed and new wheels and rubber. There are a few gc8 wagons for sale privatly I have seen around and most of them go for 10ks but you never know the real history of those cars. This is a genuine sale to free up room for the projects he has going at the moment. But I understand what you are saying teejay, 15 k does seem abit for a gc8.

You could get it tomorrow and it could do a big end.

Redline in the box and diffs make me LESS likely to trust them - that stuff is shit.

If you are worried about bits and pieces breaking do not buy a 15 year old performance car.

Where is the negative Redline info TJ?
Test results preferred too.

Tests for their engine oils come up good, like top 3 results on BITOG.

Surely their trans oils are similar quality?

Fine, not 17k, 15k instead.
As I said buy a version 6 STI... At least it is worth the coin when you buy it!

Not a GC8 which is a bitsa....

You're entirely right. I have a rebuilt engine, but have no receipts as most was built in my shed. But the car you're looking at would be undoubtably more reliable and better. And 15K? Oh what a steal.

you say its been well looked after and never boosted by more than 9psi and you trust him because he's been your mech for 5 years... so why has it had the gearbox replaced? Why has he even swapped engines?

You even said he's pumped close to 30k in it... I would be expecting a full fledged beast for that amount of money, not a fairly standard wrx. The whole thing sounds dodge to me.

Walk away, for starters its too much for a gc8, just because he's a long time mechanic doesnt mean he's going to do you any favours... especially asking for 15.

If you're looking at dropping v6 sti gear in further down the track, go buy a v6 sti now.
