I had the kartboy short shifter with front and rear bushings installed yesterday on a 09 wrx.

Some comments after driving it for a day -

Shifts are now noticeably much shorter and the new bushings give it a very solid shifting feel.
The gear stick assembly is tight when in gear as opposed to stock which felt like it had a lot of free play.
You have to pay attention to shifts as each gear slots in very precisely where as on the stock shifter you could throw it in the general direction and it would go in.

I think with a heavier knob it would make more of an improvement.

Should be able to get the entire setup including bushings for less than the GFB.

change the linkage too rich, they're only about $50, my bugeye has about 180kkm on it and this linkage is fully worn out, will notice the difference much more than just changing the bushes

its on my list of shit to do when i change my clutch

The 5 speed knob - It's not screw on is it? How do you get it off?

Sure? This is the knob I have - Genuine - No sign of screw? Looks more like a plug/push in and never come out? I'm sure I will figure it out. Pretty sure the 6 speed knob has a thread inside it.

Rich, the top of the boot has a small plastic ring inside of it, this allows it to "mate" to the boot.
I've taken mine out in the old car (MY08), all I did was apply pressure from one side of the boot where it meets the knob and it has then come loose.
Then unscrew the knob, it takes a while due to the 15 to 20mm of thread on it and then its off!

Example:
