Default gearbox upgrades

Hi everyone,
a while ago, what i thought was my clutch blew when i took my foot off he accelerator and let the revs drop.. I figured it was the clutch because it only made a noise when the clutch was engaged. I decided it was time for an engine upgrade anyway, so instead of pulling out the gearbox, i pulled the engine and replaced it with a version 3 jdm sti motor and fitted a lovely new paddle clutch kit with a new thrust and spigot bearing. started the car and it was still making this horrible grinding, buzzing noise. obviously i blew the gearbox. so now i have to replace the gearbox, and im worried that now ive got a more powerfull motor and am hoping to get around the 400 bhp mark, if i put a standard 97 box in, ill just blow it again. ive always wanted a 6 speed but have recently been thinking about an RA box because of the closer ratio giving quicker acceleration. i have no clue about gear boxes and ratios, but i know if i change to a different ratio box, i need to change the rear diff ratio too, right? any info about changing to a different ratio box and rear diff or which box would be the best upgrade for my 97 wrx would be much appreciated.
thankyou!!

yeah i live in england but my subaru is still in perth so i try to work on her when im over on holiday.. thanks for the link though, but i would really like to know a little more about different boxes before i decide which one i want. and yeah i figured that the new clutch might snap a standard 5 speed in half but like i said i really dont know much about the gearbox side of things... one more thing, what the heck does dccd mean? haha cheers

If you're living in the UK, I suggest you look at the Type RA UK Forum..

PS... Driver Controlled Centre Differential

my car is still in perth so i work on it when im in aus on holiday which is quite often.. so i buy all my parts in perth. So instead of messing around with dccd, i just want a straight swap with no extra hassles.. which is my best option? is there a certain model which has a stronger gearbox? i was told the sti 5 speeds are basically the same strength as standard wrx boxes in gc8 models. and as far as i can tell all type r or ra models have dccd boxes... it feels like my only option is to get another standard 5 speed. im really not switched on with gearbox talk and everything i read on the web says a whole lot of mumbo jumbo i dont understand so im sorry for the pathetic questions!
