Default 97 (MY98) GC8 - Immobiliser hassles

Hey all,

Bought a 97 wrx from the auctions in adelaide. Unfortunately didnt have a key. Got a locksmith to cut me a key but he couldnt recode the transponder chip. It was coming up with a communications error.

Got a local locksmith to try and his computer does the same.

Something may be wrong with the obd port. Not 100% sure.

Local subaru dealer is full of first year apprentices as it seems and they cant even tell me if they can fix it. Another guy said $1000 for a new key.

I have a couple of questions.
-Does anyone have any info/pinout/photo of their obd plug so i can see what might be wrong?
- Worst case scenario, can you disable/bypass the stock immobiliser, so i can then get a new alarm and immobiliser fitted with the current key i have.

Any advice would be great.

Got my first WRX and can't drive it

Tow to a dealer and have the transponder coded.

Does the key you got cut have a transponder in it? Or is it just a metal blank?
If it had a transponder, take it to the dealer and have them code it
Also someone correct me if I'm wrong but I though my99 was the first year with transponder? Could be wrong though

Well it starts and then cuts out. So it does have an immobiliser.
Im not based in perth, so cant get to any decent locksmith who knows their stuff with subarus.

Was hoping there might be a way to just disconnect/bypass the stock immobiliser so i can get the car going then just get a decent aftermarket alarm/immob for it.

What was I thinking - 97 didn't have a factory immob/transponder.

Your fuel pump relay is cactus buddy......the relay is bypassed when the fuel pump is primed for a second or three prior to cranking and whilst cranking it over with the key - your car will be dying at the point where the system 'hands over' the fuel pump load to the dead relay.

Im sure it does. its build was like september 97.
Also has the immobiliser key light on the dash. Either flashing or solid when it cuts out.

Sept 97 will be a MY98. They were the first year with a transponder. Your car will have the white faced gauges and a centre glovebox on the dash, correct?

When you say it starts and then cuts out, does it run for about 5 seconds?
Had that issue with my 98 when I first built it. Not sure if there is a way to bypass it at all but you can buy a matched key, barrel and ECM from a wrecked car and you should be right to go.

yeah correct. Its an my98. Has the center glovebox.
And yes, runs for 3 or so seconds, has a little blip in throttle then dies.
Definately the immobiliser.

I'll see how much a wreckers option is going to cost me.

So all i need is the key, barrel, ecm? Are they not linked to the immobiliser unit ?

Also does it have to be from an MY98?

Thanks heaps
