99 GF8 needs new engine, is this an option?
Hey guys,
So last week my car died, I have confirmed today that the timing belt tensioner packed it in, as a result I need a new engine. I have gotten a quote from Stechnic for a low k jdm ej205 for $2200 (just for the engine alone not including labour etc.). However, I've just found this listing for a sti version 5 ej207 long block: Subaru Impreza WRX STI GC8 Version 5 EJ207 Long Engine | eBay As this is from the same year sti as my wrx, would it be a direct fit in and run on the stock AU ecu? Cheers |

Ask mr ebay to provide you with compression test readings from each cylinder, seeing it 'tested perfect'............
Ask for them to remove the sump and send you photo's of the internals (looking for sludge). Stechnic will back what they sell, mr ebay won't.

But before I even get into that, back to the main issue of compatibility with my car, is it just a direct swap or will wiring harnesses need modifying? I tried searching everywhere for someone who has had this query before but could not find anything on it. I messaged the seller and he said that it had 89 000 k's on it prior to being pulled out and it was pulled down to the engine because another bloke wanted the power steering pump and injectors. |

You'd just swap out the longblock - everything bolted to your current one would be swapped onto the new one, so everything still plugs in, works and fits. STI heads/cams are not the same however, unsure how that'd go with a WRX ECU.

If the coil pack is in exactly in the same place as yours it will fit and plug in,
not sure how it will run with stock ecu. Can u get the sti ecu? |

I've just done some more digging this morning and found this post on rexnet: Version4/5 Sti In A 99 Wrx - Rexnet Subaru Forums So it seems like this just might be crazy enough to work... Obviously that is not conclusive evidence that it will just drop in and run, but it is definitely promising and I'll confirm with Stechnic before I go any further. Cheers everyone I'll let you know what comes of it. |

yep - the cam & crank sensor wires need to be swapped to use an STI ecu.

With the manifold looking the way it does. I would say it's done at least

It will work & run quite well with the sti ecu
Patches made 177 kW and 319nm out of that std sti motor. Just remove the manifold paint it, replaces the hoses. |
