Default Gear selection problem

Hi Everyone,
I have a 06 WRX and I can't select 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear. I was driving on the highway back from York in 5th gear @ 110 kph, when all of a sudden the revs dropped. I took my foot off the accelerator pedal and then back on and it was free revving. So I dropped it into 4th and was babying it until I came to a stop sign. I down shifted all the way to 1st and when I turned I couldn't go into 2nd,3rd or 4th. It wasn't crunching or anything but just hard like a bitch and would not go in. I could still go into 5th, but again no propulsion and free revving. I got it towed back home($$$) and when parking it into the garage it went into reverse and also 1st. I'm new to the forum and any advice would be most helpful. Thanks

Can be a couple of things to be honest & hard for anyone over the forums to diagnose & resolve over the internet.

Could possibly be:

- Gear Selector Fork
- Clutch
- Clutch master cylinder or Slave Cylinder
- Or an actual Gearbox issue

Best bet is to have a reputable workshop check it out when they all reopen next week.

Cheers Trav

Pretty sure Doug @ STechnic has a 5 speed waiting (If your box is indeed cacti). Open on Monday.

Give them a call. Would need to once again trailer it there for diagnosis, which would be another $100 or so from Noranda to Cannington.

For diagnosis and replacement, would be up for $2-3k at least I would say.

Bluestar mobile technician - Wangara, is reasonably close to you, if it is something simple they may be able to fix it at your place instead of towing.

Not sure about $100 tow fee to Cannington, sounds too cheap??

Your 5 speed has gone to the gearbox heaven where a lot of 5 speed's live my old one included. When mine let go it went bang then couldn't select 2nd,3rd,4th or 5th could get 1st but had to turn engine off to get it and the same for reverse and car would bunny hop due to shredded teeth in the gearbox.

It's very strange thinking about what happened, nothing went bang or pop or any indication something was wrong with the car. At first I though a belt had snapped. No smoke or burning clutch fluid smell. It was just holding revs one second and then down to almost idle. My gut feeling is that it's either the selector fork or the slave cylinder. Allstar Garage is just up the road from my place, so on Monday I'll go in and speak to them. Shit start to the new year for me.
Thanks for the advice guys,

Default Update.....

So, I dropped the car off to the workshop this morning and got a phone call a few hours later. After pulling the gearbox apart the guys found out that a main bolt inside had come undone, dropped and broke 5th gear into a few pieces and then lodged in between the selector forks. They've never seen this happen before and as the gearbox has never been opened since leaving the factory, would indicate a manufacturing fault.....too late now. A new 5th gear set and I'm also getting a new clutch whilst the gearbox is out, all up ~$2200. I'm just glad it's not a new gearbox job
