Default Blown head gasket. What are my options.

As stated my 2005 sti has done its head gasket. I've been quoted 3.5-4k to repair it.

Engines done 170k, and only has a ecutek tune and an exhaust.

Now I'm no expert on the costs of building engines, half cuts or what my best option is here. If anyone could pipe up with which direction they would take here. And give me a ballpark $$$. Personally I cant justify waxing 4k getting my car back how it was, I'm thinking of selling as is or throwing some more money at it and getting something bigger and better.

Let me know your thoughts

Hey mate....Do what I did: Blew head gasket last week > nek minit can't justify 3-4k just getting engine the way it was > nek minit built monster landing in couple of weeks...

Makes it much more worth it when dropping that kind of coin into the engine imo...just really dents the account but I figured better have new build instead of something else popping later on. Do it once and do it right is the philosophy

p.s: fucking hell wtf going on with head gaskets...seems like a lot lately

I thought I had done a head gasket last week! I was quoted similar price to what you were but one of my mates father In law as he was a mechanic said "you'll save heaps of money if you rip the motor out yourself and then put it back in yourself" save a lot of money in labour and just get the workshop to the gasket and that's it!

Good luck with whatever path you take dude!

You should save yourself about +-$700 by doing this. Still cost you 1.5-2k, then if the heads can't just be resurfaced, add another 1-1.5k for reconditioning

RJ, roughly how much is your rebuild going to cost you, compared to that of a standard internal rebuild? I only ask as while it's all nice being able to say you've got pistons forged by Thor and dipped in liquid kryptonite, if the OP was to continue to only have a flashtune and exhaust, it's a waste of money if it's significantly more.

Right on the money... we discussed this via PM already dude. Also he got forged motor already so no need for building bottom end, just maybe headwork...either fix gasket or sell.
The cost of fixing the gasket isn't cheap even if the motor is taken out to the shop though, still costs a couple of grand at least.

If you only had it serviced 4 weeks ago and replaced the rad. Why did you blow a head gasket. Did you cook it before replacing the rad?

When I thought my headgasket had gone a couple of weeks ago i was told same bout 3 grand to repair and already had a built engine so I was seriously considering it. I could have got a standard wrx motor for round 2 grand but yours being sti I imagine you will be up towards the cost of repairing yours and at least you know you can make it better.
