Default Rear diff oil question

hi all I'm a newbie,
I have a My00 wrx manual. I have changed the rear driveshafts and I drained the rear diff oil. When I filled it back up it only took 1 litre. I was told the diff should take 1.4L. Can anyone tell me why the diff overflowed after only 1 litre???
Cheers Mike
