Most people wont end up chipping blades, but quickly worn out bearings is bound to happen. Chipped blades only happens on some older design turbos such as the VF22. As big as a VF22 is, it was never designed to run big boost. Initially, I beleive it was designed to run with a 34mm restrictor in place before the turbo inlet. Yes 22 was designed purely for a restrictor. As such max required boost from it was 'upto' 1.4bar.
