Default afm again ? :(

hey i had my afm cleaned about 6 weeks ago because my car would randomly stutter and drop in revs, this seemed to fix it and everything was fine... until last night. i was driving home with the aircon on (normally i hate having aircon on because of the power it drains) and i suddenly felt a loss in power half way through my trip, i pulled over and let it idle and i saw that the revs went from the 700-800 range to the low 600s and it was almost stalling. i tried driving it home and it was stuttering like crazy coming on/off boost so i had to pull over coz it was undriveable. i let it rest for a bit, turned the aircon off and turned it on again, i then managed to drive it home fine. its a my98 wrx with a few mods such as fmic, unichip, air filter, turbo back exhaust etc.

is it the afm again and does this mean it wasnt cleaned properly or just that it needs replacing? the cars due for a service soon anyways so i figure ill just wait till then?

is it an oiled filter if so maybe thats causing your AFM to get dirty all the time?
Probly best to replace if you don't want to risk anything

Definately the afm. Mine did the same coming home from rally aust. Aircon was on, wouldn't rev, totally undrivable. Sometimes it wouldn't rev past 3000rpm. New afm problem fixed. Mines a 99 model.

Sometimes when an AFM is really on its way out, a good clean up can give it a few more days or even weeks, but it will eventually die.

Thumbs down

To all those that own 99/00 WRX's.
If your Air Flow Meter has not been replaced for the life of the car I strongly suggest you do it NOW.

It should be replaced at least every 2-3 years on this model especially if you are running an aftermarket filter.

$170-$190 ish is cheap insurance against the engine going PING, PONG POP, especially those of you running a Power FC or Unichip.

Do it now before you really lean the engine out and get stranded somewhere.

Its not a matter of if but when on these models.

by crap he means unload an unholy amount on it and hope for the best ill assume :P but as sumone said before, soldering/ contact cleaner on the afm will only be a temp solution. The best solution is to replace it all together. Providing this is an AFM problem.
