Jez,

Since Valentine 1 is the best for WA in ur opinion, will its performance be improved as well by mounting a vertical bracket??

Also how much would it cost to install the little bugger?

THanks, I have my 8500 custom installed (hardwired with mute button close to the indicator stalk) does the Valentine use the same telephone style plug as the 8500?

Yes, it will improve the V1 further by mounting vertically:
http://www.radardetector.net/viewtopic.php?t=24690

But I never have tried myself since it gives AMPLE warning normally. Also, the V1 uses a completely different bracket to the Bel / Escorts.

To install?? The standard V1 is like any other detector, it mounts on the windscreen and has a cigarette lighter power cord. It also comes standard with a hardwire kit. It's pretty easy to run the (hard-wire) power cable from your rear-view mirror across the top and down the a-pillar to behind the dash/glove/centre console and tap into power (so long as your car isn't a CANN-BUS system). It takes me only about an hour to do all that including mounting the remote display unit somewhere handy (and I'm no install pro).

If you're meaning the remote V1 then this depends on the car. I usually just recommend a couple of install places to people, to get quotes from.

Stinga, yes, the V1 uses a RJ12 power cable as well, except you won't have the ability to mute the detector if you use an Escort cable. Something funny in the hard wire kit stops you muting your V1 (I tried it before). Would recommend using the hardwire cable that comes with the V1.

Hey Jezza,

I'm trying to decide between the Escort X50 and the Valentine one V1. I've been reading a few reviews, namely http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=9090 and a couple of others which whilst not as harsh as this say there very equal. What i'm trying to work out is whether the valentine is worth the extra $300?

Has anyone used either or both of these detectors and care to comment?

Most of those reviews are done in the US against US radars. Here the main threat is laser and Multanova. You need to find a review on those.
For multanovas I did one here:

http://www.delonixradar.com.au/radar.../top_four.html

And for laser this is the best test I've seen:

http://www.laserveil.com/laser/detec...e/conclusions/

Dash mounted K-band is easy to detect with any reasonable detector.
Also Craig Peterson of radartest.com consults to Beltronics. It is worthwhile having a good read through:

http://www.radardetector.net/viewtopic.php?t=20201

It's a big (long) read but worth noting. Craig Peterson (radartest.com) has been testing radars for many years, you could call him the grandfather of radar detector testings, but there seems to be a few issues of late...you may also like to read this:

http://www.guysoflidar.com/march-2007/sabotage.html

I am more than happy to lend you an Escort for a week and then a Valentine One, so you can compare. I ran a Bel 990i for 3 and a bit years, then a RX65 for nearly a year, and then an Escort for almost a year before I finally tried a Valentine.

If budget comes into it, then the Escort is my first choice. It's a top detector, and has never let me down. It has always given sufficient warning on Multanovas. But if I could afford it, I'd choose the V1 any day.

Tell me if i am wrong here .. But what is the point of a laser detector? Once it detects it your speed has already registered on the gun ..

All it's confirming is that you're about to get a ticket.

i beleive that the laser can detect the radar before the laser on the radar can detect ur speed.... thats wat i'd assume

For people who have a radar detector and have still got 'done' by a speedgun, how have you gone when the Police have caught up with you and noticed you have a radar detector?

I would imagine if you didn't get in the shit for it (they are still legal in WA yes?) they would make some kind of a smart ass comment.
