The XR950 is the "AU/NZ" version of the vector 995 series from Beltronics. Neltronics (the Australian distributor for Beltronics radars) has changed their models recently, removing the RX65, the RX75 and the XR950 / XR650. I think they are getting rid of their RX55 & Vector 965 inventory and just having the XR70, XR80 and STi (Bel XR)

It was funny, seeing they used to use quotes from the American models, but chaged the name to the Austrlaian model they were selling....

...but anyway, that is a whole separate thread.

So the XR950 is the same internals as the Vector 995 - which is the same platform as the RX65 but with less features. So performance wise, it should be the same as a RX65, but as I've tried to educate people in Australia, the RX65 was never made for the Australian market - in terms of our Ka-band licensing spectrum and the Multanova we have here.

I just got a video sent to me from a guy who has a 995 and only got about 3 seconds warning on one particular run against a Multanova. That was the worst I have ever seen!

someones with more laser knoledge should be able to tell ya if this is correct
Laser guns in Aus send out 100 pulses of IR light (904nm frequency) every second. The laser gun requires about 40 - 60 of these pulses to generate a speed reading, so potentially, they can get your speed in less than half a second (if they get a good surface to target).

A laser (lidar) gun essentially takes a series of distance readings. From this, is uses distance (calulated) and time (known) to calculate your speed.

If you are the only car on the road, and you are 'targeted' with a lidar gun, you have buckleys chance of a warning with a radar (laser) detector.

If you are behind a car that is targeted you also have buckley's chance of detecting the signal being fired at him (the car in front) because the laser beam is so narrow.

If the laser is being aimed at the front number plate (an excellent target to bounce IR off, being
1) perpendicular to the road and
2) made of retro reflective metal material)
then you have little chance of the laser beam "spilling" over the bonnet and alerting you behind.

This is why a laser detector mounted on the windscreen doesn't always go off at laser targeted at YOU!

I must admit the main reason i ahve my radar detector is agains K and KA on country trips (we have an office in bunbury & 6 in the pilbara, and i like to make trips to albany from time to time) The fact that it also supports Laser is purely a bonus. Realistacly i write off laser detection and keep my eyes open. That said, on the way home from Forest rally this year i picked up a very short weak laser warning, and i slammed on the brakes... but there was no police man ahead. rob was following and his detector picked up nothing. Sure enough 2 minutes later i cam across the police shooting lasers (pew pew)

24.15GHz + - 100MHz
Used in WA by old hand-held radar (not laser) guns from Kustom and WA dash mounted radars in the HWP cars, also by every damn automatic door openers on the way

Jezza, I received the bracket.. Thanks!

This morning I went past a multinova and the distance may have been marginally better but it is too early to tell. Should I be running the RX65 in autoscan or should I have it on Highway/City?

Cheers.

Highway definitely.

Autoscan cuts down the range significantly in my testing against cameras.
