That said above is all true. A year ago, I didn't have a huge issue with Abos. In fact, once a while ago I was actually decent friends with one. And don't get me wrong, there's still decent ones out there... Anyone hate Erni Dingo?

BUT, it was about a year ago that my view of the 'general aboriginal community' was changed.
I think that no individual should be judged in one particular way (ie stereotyped) untill there is 'guilt' there. This used to apply for aboriginals. Yes, I saw the bad stuff they did on tv and in the news, but I put that down to individuals and their actions, not an entire race of people. That view changed, however, when I was reading the paper. An elderly lady was RAPED and BASHED and had her possessions stollen. She ended up in hospital. Paragraph 2 stated the culprits: Aboriginals.
That's when it clicked and now I simply have no respect for them in general.

Appologise? Hmmm..
Money? Get fukd..

Can someone actually clarify what happened with the 'stolen generation' ?

Were they simply stolen....or were they taken from their families?
What were the reasons behind them taking the children away? Was it due to the families not being able to support their children?

Because everyday there are children being taken from their families due to government agencies etc who feel that the families cannot support their children....and its these decisions that are made by people who sit behind desks and generally have no history of bringing up a family. Yet these same families dont get help from the government with bringing up a family etc so why are they not having a 'sorry day' because either way...whether your aboriginal or caucasian, having your child taken away from you would be one of the most traumatic experiences one would have.

Clearly an apology must be made...whatever any of us think about indigenous Australians.

The call for compo is predictable and should be dismissed.

Removing a proportion of children probably was a good thing, but the problem was having a "one size fits all" policy where a (high?) proportion would have been best left with their families.
Obviously I will get severely flamed for this reply, but I think/hope that overall, the Australian population in 2008 is a bit more sophisticated and socially aware than we were 40 odd years ago. There are still rednecks amongst us, but hopefully their numbers are on the wane.
Let the aplology be made and let us all move on....

I used to be against this because I was uninformed, but I'm now starting to agree more with it.

I agree with Kevin Rudd apologising for what the Australian Government did to the traditional aboriginal people for a period of 60 years (1910s - 1970s). It was a terrible thing to do, as the aboriginal people were more than happy to live off their land as they were and had done for thousands of years. Imagine if the government came in, and took you away from your family beecause they thought it was for your own protection? You'd be angry too.

Many of these people were NOT better off "integrated" into white society....look at how many problems we have with aborigines now? Much of this came from integrating aborigines into our white society in a very very short period of time, rather than allowing it to happen naturally over a period of hundreds of years.

The government thought that within 6 generations, aborigines would be erradicated. I don't know who actually thought that would occur, but it sure was a stupid idea. It really hasn't help anyones situation, especially not ours with the amount of taxpayers money that goes towards supporting the bitter and disadvantaged aboriginal society that currently exists and was created by this ridiculous policy of removing children from their families. Now these peoples children are instilled with the skewed and acerbic views of an angry race, and it snowballs from there right through aboriginal society....it just causes more problems with welfare and crime, as we all know.

I DO NOT agree with individual Australian's apologising though, as personally we've done nothing wrong. We just need to understand and realise what has happened, and that acknowledgement is apology enough from individual Australian's.

I also DO NOT agree with any litigation that may take place. An apology can be interpreted as an admission of fault or guilt, so lets see what happens from here...

It's going to take more than an apology to sort this one out, but at least its a start.

It's very easy to say "stupid boongs" or "dirty car-stealing coons". Fair enough, we can't change the fact that many of these people really are the scum of the earth and a lot of us have experienced the effects of this through crime, etc, but how about we start looking at the underlying factors and maybe we can do something about it for our future generations?
