I cant change the screensaver cos the tab is missing when you go to display. Can you download a trial version of Mcafee ( what is the .DAT about )

Zone alarm was always good enough on my laptop. Maybe it is time to tell mother to try something different.

.DAT are the extensions for the virus definitions, If you have McAfee do an auto-update or manually download and update, sounds like you got the machine cleaned anyway ?

I don't know if you read what I wrote, but if you click start you will see xp antivirus installed. It is a virus. It is malware.

Download malware bytes, it will clean most of it up.

Go to c:\windows\system32 and see if there is anything called display in there, that is why you can't change the screensaver because the virus deleted / renamed it

Also if you hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC you will probably see .exe files running in the process like

xncdkrjt.exe and
pexjehrr.exe etc..
