I say make dole recipients sit in a room at a desk for 8 hours a day with no talking, TV or phone/games/sleeping just like a job. Get paid at the end of the week for days you show up. drug test them also - fail it, no money for you!
People will get a job rather than take dole unless they truely are desperate. Working for the dole will be more boring than working so they'll work.

In the recent boom if you had no job you wern't trying and didn't deserve the dole. You could accidently get a job

don't get me wrong, i think there are people who really deserve these payments but also there are many who don't.
I saw a 30ish surfie heading for the beach this morning at my local deli, being happy coz he got his money. Now that'd supply him enough weed till christmas. Now I'm getting paid around $4500 a month for my 9-5 work. $3k goes to pay off the morgage, now we are expecting a baby soon so my wife will be off work for some time. That leaves me with $1500 to spend a month. If i wasnt working I'd be getting $900 a month x 2 of us = $1800 of dole money. I wouldn't be paying for morgage but i'd have a cheap homeswest house to live in, on the top of that add baby payments/parenting allowance all tax free and i have $1000 a month more to spend than in my current situation. Luckily i planned this bit more and I will have an extra income in that period while she's off work but i can't imagine a normal aussie family going thru the same situation without juggling whether they should or shouldn't work. end rant

Grass is greener on the other side of the fence isnt it?
My old man hasnt worked in many a year through no choice of his own, so thus relies on government hand outs to live. We also own our house so there is no rent or payments to worry about. And ill tell you now its no walk in the park that you seem to be dreaming of. Watching a proud man struggle to conjure together enough money to live week to week is demoralising and depressing for not only himself, but for his family. Thus your rant is about as valid as turbotims attempt at winning the national spelling bee.

i said that there are people who need that money and people who do try but cannot find work...ie my neighbour. Her english is poor but she was fired from a company she worked for 20 years, she 59 and cannot find work even though she really wants to....i don't have a problem with that sort of person, dont think anyone does. Also don't think anyone would have a problem with ur old man. I'm fairly certain YOU know what type of people i'm talking about, people who fill out their centerlink form in front of the centerlink clerk. Then they ask the clerk if they can borrow 'yellow pages' and proceed writing some random company names who they have 'contacted' for employment. How do i know, because I spent time with my neighbour (the one mentioned above) at centerlink trying to organise her payments not long ago. Lets not generalise, as i said before: there are people who needed and there are people who CBF working and never will

you wouldn't be living in a homeswest house i can gaurentee you that
they are really hard to get into and only then when things are real dire... waiting lists like you wouldn't believe! You would need to be renting and then you would get the extra 25 bucks a week to help with having to pay $300-$400 a WEEK! It is no fun on benefits and whilst you can (and many people do as we all know) you live accordingly... Seriously tho i've worked in the industry where you had to report to me your hours and looking for work attempts and trust me we were really getting somewhere with Howards gov ie getting your money cut if we know your making it all up.....and now Labour is in and its a free for all nearly again. sigh! I still work in HR but now people come to me for work Its a hard line to balance (dole) as even i have been sick and in a health position where i couldn't work for 6months it is NO fun and quite demoralising for sure... |

My father in law (in his own words) works like a Donkey on building sites. His English is poor and he does what he needs too to pay the bills, and he is paid well with no specific skills. He cleans up or whatever. He had a cruisy job years ago with Transfield but was made redunadant. In his country it would be a different story but he makes do.

I dont think its just the handouts at centrelink I can't understand how part of being australian is supposed to be work hard and earn the aussie dream of your own house etc. When I had a average paying job I needed a second job (aswell as my fiances job) just to get enough to get a home loan. And then I was getting taxed something like 40% of my second jobs earnings because you can only have one full time job under the low tax exemption (the thing you sign on your tax form when starting a new job). Meaning I was earning fuck all at the end of the day for my second job pushing me to work even more hours. I ended up seeing my missus for about 1 hour a night and not even that on weekends (worked all weekend).
Now Ive given both those jobs in for the mines and while Im earning a fair bit more which is great I am working just as many hours (minus my week off i dont get paid for) and am getting taxed a bullshit amount of money. It seems the harder you work in this country the more they sting you. I'm pretty sure we are the highest paid country in the world. And so where does that money go? To the government to build schools and roads etc. hats great. But it also funds centrelink. My dad also can't work because he got emphyzema (spelling?) even though he never smoked or anything. He gets fuck all from the government because my mum works, so she has to work bullshit hours (he rarely sees her) so they can get by while there are these crackheads sitting in there free houses taking the money WE earn. To get the dole you should be drug tested just like you are at the mines. It should happen the day before you get your payment and if they have a feeling you are on something then random testings whenever they like. I also heard about new centrelink style "credit" cards that only let you spend the money on essentials and stuff? I don't know how true it is but its a good idea. I'd rather keep my money and help my dad out myself thank you very much, that way we can filter out the people who waste it and can easily work... |
