Do we live in a socialistic country?
Would Lenin be proud of Australia?
I work, I pay taxes. If I didn't work, the government would give me a pension, a house because I can't afford to buy one, rent assistance, cheaper medical treatment, cheaper medicine, cheaper train/bus rides, cheaper electricity bills (and if I'm an abo times all of these benefits by two), and now a gran to spend on myself. I work - because I'm an idiot, and to anwser the title question, I think so..what's your opinion?

we live in a country that gives a bloke a chance... albeit a few to many chances.
Are you so silly to think everyone can have a well paid job? If everyone was a docter who would unblock the shitter? Unfortunately, even though we are a civilised country, the majority of jobs out there, only just pay enough to get by. pay bills, buy food, and rent. So it is unfortunate, that someone on the dole can get just as much as these people who work, because it is the minimum amount someone needs, just to live. I think our system goes too far in the way a person can live for 20 years on the dole. But it should definetly be there for someone inbetween jobs, say up to a maximum of 6 months. Our Government has come a long way now though, after a certain amount of time, to still receive your payments, you have to prove that you have been looking for work. and after 6 months, they send you to a full day course twice a week that teaches you how to find a job and helps you actually find work.... Still... Its easy to get around the system...

^^^ It's not about finding people work, it's about getting people off their system!!
When I was in between jobs, I had to keep a log of every job (and hand it in) I'd applied to that fortnight or I wouldn't get paid the dole.

yep, but how easy is it screw that system?
"a friend of mine" - used to apply for 3 jobs a week as CEO of a company, or as a engineer or anything that he simply had no chance of getting. that way, even if they did check up on it, records showed that he had applied, just never had a chance of getting a job... agreed though. Even a bum with no clothes could get a job these days, even with the current global circumstances. Not about finding jobs, getting people to WANT a job.

I still think a "work for the dole" scheme while you are in between jobs is better than just handing out money. Even if it's joining a council workers team and helping out
